A little preparation helps when your route includes changing conditions, offline stretches or a limited data plan.
Remote areas can mean no signal
Cell service varies between national parks and can be inconsistent within a park. Check the park’s visitor information and save maps before arriving. Do not rely on mobile service for remote navigation or emergencies.
Check your charger and plug
US sockets are Type A/B, with 120V, 60Hz supply. Check your charger’s printed input range and bring a plug adapter if needed. An adapter changes plug shape, not voltage; follow the manufacturer’s guidance for devices that need voltage conversion.
Download maps while online
Download Google Maps areas while online, covering your entire driving route. Offline driving has no live traffic; walking and transit directions need a connection. Save park visitor information separately before heading somewhere remote.
Limit background data if you need to
Use Apple Low Data Mode or Android Data Saver to reduce background cellular use. Features vary by device; allow essential apps the access they need. Check data usage during the trip and leave large backups or updates for Wi-Fi.
